My name is Amanda Crawford, and I’m an illustrator living and working in Montréal, Québec, Canada. Throughout my life I have always made art of one kind or another. I am formally trained as a goldsmith, and worked as a painter for many years. I also worked in the medium of comics for a few years before coming to the realization that all roads were, after all, leading me to illustration.
My drawing style is simultaneously naturalistic and stylized, distinguished by my penchant for detail and love of ornament of all kinds. My work elicits a sense of the ‘inner reality’ of a person, situation, time, place or event by combining the elements of outward, or ‘ordinary’ reality in unexpected ways. I work using traditional methods from sketch to completed image, currently favouring pencil, gouache, coloured pencil and combinations thereof. I draw and paint the vast majority of my background patterns on rice paper.
I am currently at work on my first picture book for children of all ages.
