Sharp tailed Sandpipers taken at Ash Island, Newcastle, NSW.
The disadvantage of using high powered lenses is it is difficult to get a good DOF. Taken using a Nikon D3s at f22 and 1/400 sec. using 1000mm lens (500mm x 2 times teleconvertor).
No photoshop magic here Alwyn?… ahh… the limitations of technology can be a good thing sometimes though… I’m always impressed with that lens of yours.
Yep Mate, the big lens does have a limited DOF and I need plenty of light to use the high f stop numbers and still have a reasonable shutter speed. It was just magic on the ponds that morning. A friend went the next day (Yesterday) and there was not a sharp tailed Sandpiper to be seen and there were over 100 there this morning which was the day before.

Fantastic image, what a beautiful gang of sandpipers – lack of DOF notwithstanding!!
Many thanks Barbie for your comments. They are appreciated.

Great shot Alwyn, they quite small birds so you’ve done well. We don’t get nearly that many down here!
Thanks Deb. That morning there were several hunderd on the wetlands. The next two days there were none. All the best – LOL.
