Painted Finch near Tom Price - WA by

I stopped at a waterhole along the road outside Tom Price in WA and was lucky to find two of these finches had come in for the water. Normally extremely timid, these two were cautious but stayed and allowed me to capture some photos.

Great image Alwyn. How close were you to the bird.

  • Many thanks Dizzyheights. I was about 10 meters from the bird. The shot has been cropped but is still 1900×1270 so there is a lot of body there. I was behind foliage on the bank when they flew in.

A great capture Alwyn. The reds are brilliant.

  • Thanks Al. I have managed to photograph a few of these over time but this is the best that I have come up with. The reds are bright and it is as shot.

Wow what a beauty and is similar to the red-eared species found in western Australia. Great capture

  • Thanks Robert. I have not come across that species. This was shot in WA. I am away at the moment and need to check my book.

They are great little birds I used to keep these Finches before I took up photographing them Spot on focus with that lens

  • Thanks Cyril. Yes this is the best shot that I managed to get. I need a silent shutter on that camera. I only got this one shot this close and they took off when the shutter clicked.
