Slender-billed Thornbill - New Beach - Carnarvon.by Alwyn Simple
The Slender-billed Thornbill is said to be Australia’s rarest Thornbill. I photographed this one as part of a small colony of about 6 birds just after the turnoff to New Beach from the Bush Bay Road. This area is around 40 kl south of Carnarvon. There was also a small colony at New Beach but these birds were shy and I could not get close enough to get a photo. They live in samphire that grows on salt flats close to mangroves. These birds are listed as venerable although in the area where I was I saw around a dozen of them.
I’ve missed the bird shots Mate. You haven’t lost the knack. A fantastic shot and a fav Mate.
Thanks Al, yes I seem to have got myself wrapped up in landscapes just for the moment. Don’t worry it will pass and I will return to birds. I was wrapped to get this fellow on my trip. Makes it worth while carrying the big lens over and back.
Just AMAZING! To be able to photograph such a small bird is incredible! But a tiny baby that is so endangered & rare is !!! No words that are appropriate…. Anita
Many thanks Anita. Sometimes we get lucky which was the case here. In this instance I stopped the car to photograph another bird when one of these came to investigate. I could not believe my luck. Many thanks for your comments

Fantastic capture Alwyn of a lovely little bird. I hope they manage to breed up to become less endangered.
Thanks Barb. They are beautiful and seem friendly. (Not frightened)
Think they are endangered because of the destruction of their habitat.
