Crested Bell Bird - Bowra Station - Cunnamullaby Alwyn Simple
Another one of our seldom seen birds is the Crested bellbird. They live in the dry arid parts of Central Australia. They are ground feeding and tree feeding birds and are at home in either place. They tend to fly into the thickest tree when disturbed. They have a dark crest on the top of their head which they can raise when they want to.
A strange practice of this bird is it places immobilised live caterpillars around the rim of its nest. Why? I do not know!
Thanks Hedoff. I searched for them for five days before I found one. I had seen them before in western NSW but there was no way that I could get close enough to get a photo. I have found that they are very shy.
I’ve never seen one of these before Alwyn, do they also sound like the bell birds you hear when driving through the forests?
Just another lovely close up shot! :) Great detail! :)
Gabe :)
Hi Gabe. unless you have been out west you will not see these and then only if you are lucky. No they do not sound like the Bell Miner that you refer to. Thanks again for the support and comments
Thanks Phil. They are a beautiful clean looking bird and all the ones I have seen, (Which are not many – probably around 6), are always well groomed and neat with their plumage.
Beautiful capture…I love the light and colors…so many sandy tones. It is not a colorful bird, but stil very beautiful :)
Yes I agree Saya, a very beautiful bird. I was so happy when I managed to take this photo. They are hard to get close to as they are very shy. Thank you for your comments.
