Artist's Description

This piece was inspired by a poem I wrote called Traveling .

TRAVELING

Every year
the black hills of home
stand elegant to greet me,
their quiet earth reaches out to meet me
and cradle me
with memories of a quiet youth.
Standing tall and proud,
Massive.
we are very much alike,
the hills and I:

Like them,
I too swell up
and show off,
but I reach higher for Heaven’s Hand.
Naked and vulnerable
I pray God will smile on me
in my travel to experience love
and peace;
in my climb to freedom
through knowledge of The Truth.

We are made of the same
The same ruggedness prevails.
Like me,
they too endure storms of disappointment
to appreciate seasons of growth
and happiness.

Every year I go home
to meet God in the same familiar place,
to shimmer with my black friends
in the mustard spray of Heaven’s Sprinkle;
to pray amidst the elegant hills of home.
