Design, t-shirts, and what makes me tick...

Hi all

I thought about writing my first ‘informative’ journal entry, so here I am. Firstly I’d like to say if you enjoy this read I would love to hear it! Secondly, I’d love to know what you think…

When I first joined RedBubble around 6 months ago, my main and only aim was to showcase my photography. T-shirt design had never even crossed my mind, until I saw you could sell clothing. A few months went by and I eventually decided to try my hand at my first design. I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it, and so decided to create a few more! It was only after having one of my designs featured, and a multitude of comments, that I realised my real passion lay in design…

The first t-shirt featured, and sold:

Being a web designer and developer, graphic design has always been a big part of my job. I have never trained in any of my ‘professional’ fields, and am literally self taught in all design, illustration, photography, and coding (major geek as you can tell!). After joining RedBubble and receiving some amazing feedback, I felt a new calling and inspiration for my artistic side. Ever since, I have been so much more driven at both work, and in my personal time, and that’s all thanks to the community here at RB.

A group of like minded people is an incredible thing. Surrounding yourself with people who share your passion, who appreciate not just your work, but other peoples, and give you something to talk about. People of all different talents and experiences, taking perception and sharing it. All this talent crammed into a single place really affects us, both consciously, and subconsciously.

Since discovering my love for t-shirt design, I decided to sign up for another account (this one) to keep my designs, seperate from my photography. I now try to create a new design whenever I get spare time, and things I have heard from other members is just wonderful. I cannot thank you enough!

I guess it goes to show that you never really know who you are and what you like, until you try something! My drive to market my designs has also suprised me… I now have twitter, facebook, myspace and dailybooth accounts just to get my name out and about. Everywhere and anywhere! I’ve made a website, printed business cards, and if I think of anything else I’ll do it! Slowly but surely it is paying off, the odd sale here, new faces there, it’s wonderful!

I think the thing I enjoy the most is the fact that someone wants to wear your design… I just find that out of this world. The fact that everytime I sell a t-shirt, I know somewhere on this planet, someone has liked something I’ve done, enough to buy it and wear it! (unless they’ve just bought it to burn!) Not just to buy and shove on a shelf on hang on a wall, but to go outside and show others something they though was worthy to dress in, just amazing!

So I guess what I’m try to say is how much I enjoy this place, and how much it’s inspired me to do better.

I’d love to know what you think!

Thanks guys :)
