Crotalus atrox – The Western Diamondback Rattlesnake.

This one may have been as long as a meter, but they can get up to 2 meters long!

Been spending a lot of time up on Mt. Baldy in Southern California. I ran across this critter one morning. He was not too far from the campgrounds, in fact. A little freaky knowing they are around, but it IS their home; I’m just a guest.

S/He never rattled at me during the photo session, but I could tell that my presence was none too welcome. A 200mm lens at full-zoom kept me far enough away to be safe. Respect for these animals and their environment is key to ensuring that one is never bitten. I have been hiking and camping all over California and have run into many, many rattlesnakes. I have never been bitten.
