Artist's Description

BEST VIEWED LARGER

The Tawny Frogmouth. Podargus strigoides.

This awesome and unusual bird is NOT an owl, though some refer to it as such. This little fella resides at the Australian Reptile Park in the Central Coast region of New South Wales, Australia.

He (or she) was not afraid of this Yank leaning in to get a close up shot, but DOES seem to be regarding me rather cooly. I decided not to push it any further because, although its wide beak is designed to catch and eat insects, it sure looks like it could take a sizeable chunk out of this intrepid photographer’s flesh!

Taken while on my awesome Australian Adventure, late November, 2010.
