I ran across this little critter today while out on safari. We checked each other out for a few minutes, then went about our business . . .

Great to see mantis and shadow interplay.. with the focus right on that eye looking back at you!
A curiosity I’ve noticed and now look for: on various insects’ eyes, the apparent pupil we may see is actually an optical effect, that shifts with position of the observer; it is neither a real hole, nor a pigment spot. Is it the observer’s shadow, or the reflection of the darkness of our own observing pupil? However it’s produced, the effect neatly serves to give their faceted compound eyes a more recognisably humanoid look, as an ‘expressive eye’ of the sort we are used to; and so we can often perceive, even in the rather alien forms of an insect head, a recognisable ‘face’. Odd, though, isn’t it?
Thanks, Aramdillo!! I tried to make him/her raise into the defensive position that looks like they are going to attack with their matrial arts. This one was just too mellow and unconderned about me, so I stopped annoying him/her and just shot my shots!
