Deep into a mountain hike, I saw many of these butterflies around the scrub Oak trees. One thing I noticed about them is that they perch with their wings up, and that the colors of the under-wing is very dull compared to the upper wing.
When processing the photo, I think I figured out why. The DOF in the shot blurs the background, but the dull colors of the butterfly’s wing would blend perfectly in this environment.
Perfect camouflage! The vibrant color of the upper wings probably serves for mating.
Nature is AMAZING!
