Mind, Heart, Soul.

A comfortable silence,
Our faces,
An inch apart.
And in your eyes
I saw
The battle between your Mind and Heart.

Oh, thunder shook the ground
And lightning did rend the sky
While wave after wave of Emotion
Refused to be pushed aside.

They battered the walls of Logic
And whispered sweet nothings to your Soul.
“Your argument is filled with fallacies!”, screamed the Mind,
In an attempt to turn the battle for control.

“Have you not seen where Emotions will take you?
Your judgement is clouded beyond repair.
Take a deep breath, I pray you,
Madness fills the air.”

“Is it madness to love another
With your entire heart?
Is it madness to believe
Life and Love are not ruled by rational thought?

Do you find that Happiness and Fulfilment
Are the result of a meticulously planned course?
And where do Righteousness and Freedom
Fit into this schedule of yours?

For are we not Spirits clad in veils?
Have we not Salvation by the blood of the Lamb who was slain?"

“Save your breath, O Heart,
Your words are spoken in vain."

“And there, O Mind, is where you fail
Time and time again.
You have not the capacity to fathom
The world that awaits us when yours has reached it’s end.

We permeate the battleground
Of the forces of Light and Dark,
Everyday a war is waged
For things far beyond the limits of your narrow worldly thoughts.

So perhaps it is you, O Mind,
That is sadly wasting your breath.
We speak of things eternal
And you retort
With illogical Human Logic at it’s best."

Mind, Heart, Soul. by

Well.. I started writing this about a kind of a daydream I had where I was looking into the eyes of someone very special to me who I know has a tendency to over analyse things. In this moment of silence, staring into each other’s eyes, I saw the inner struggle painted clearly on her face. What started out as a battle between the Mind and Heart quickly became very one sided as the Spirit stepped in. The overall idea being that human logic is exactly that, human. It’s imperfect because we are imperfect. And though logic has it’s times and places, our human logic may come across situations where it can potentially be useless or worse, detrimental to us. Love is illogical, spirituality is illogical, everything that Jesus did for us on the cross is illogical and everything God has done, is doing or will do completely defies human logic. But just because God defies human logic does that make the notion of a logic higher than our own preposterous? I think not. And so, I do not trust my mind and I do not entirely trust my heart as well. They are both biased. However, The Holy Spirit always knows the truth. God bless you all.
“Faith is not granted by tangible proof. It comes from the heart and the soul. If a person needs proof of God’s existence, then the very notion of spirituality is diminished into sensuality and we have reduced what is holy into what is logical.” -R. A. Salvatore

“And where do Righteousness and Freedom
Fit into this schedule of yours?”- This line is hauntingly amazing Binh. I haven’t quite figured out why yet. But I’ve heard that’s a sign of a good writer.

  • Glad you enjoyed this poem! And that particular verse was very interesting for me. Well everything the heart said really, because if you look back, the heart doesn’t actually make a statement throughout the whole poem, yet still, in that verse it was very much on the offensive. For the mind criticizes the heart as if the mind is blameless but the heart retorts with questions the cut right through logic to things the mind knows nothing about. Which would be (assumingly) quite the blow to the mind, for the mind prides itself on logic, reasoning, deduction, argument, analysis and all those good things that we as a society value above most other things (even though they are horribly flawed and are very susceptible to our imperfect nature, our sin, our corruption, our manipulation and distortion.) Well, I could sit here and annotate my own poem until the cows came home but I’ll end it here. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my work and I’m glad you enjoyed it! Hope you have a great night and I hope you’ll check out some more work! God bless you!

I think that the mind and heart working in unison are a pathway to a really strong faith. That when we go deep in analysis of sensory experience that we gain a wisdom that is the most true gospel. However many of us seem to feel things deeply and then hold to quick and often shallow beliefs. Further we then often agressively defend such beliefs without ever having gone deep into understanding the reasons we hold the beliefs.

  • I understand where you are coming from Tony, I appreciate the time and thought you’ve taken into reading and understanding this poem and the thought you’ve put into this comment, I would also like to say that I respect your opinion. While I personally believe that there is a time and place where our human minds are useful in understanding some of the ways of Our Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit, for example, when first hearing the Gospel, you need to use your mind to understand and discern the message hidden in the Word of God to let it speak to your heart, which The Lord will then use to plant a seed there and help you bring your Spirit back to life through baptism of water, following, accepting and knowing He who is Sovereign over all things in Heaven and Earth, Jesus Christ. One thing I do want to say is that though Christianity is founded on firm, righteous and just beliefs given to us by The Lord God Almighty, the core of Christianity is having an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Coming to know Jesus and through Him, all is given to us, His children. In my honest opinion I believe that our human minds are imperfect and they are very limited, I believe that they cannot truly grasp the things that take place in the spiritual realms because much of what happens in the spiritual realms and the things that The Lord does, completely defy human logic. For believers that become angry in the defence of their beliefs and their Lord, I think, are not yet mature enough in their faith to be put in such situations. For if they were to stand firm in Christ Almighty, I believe, that nothing the enemy throws against them would shake them. Again I would like to thank you for your time Tony. If you would like to discuss this further please feel free to message me. May The Lord watch over you and protect you in all that you do, may He guide you and bless you and keep you. Peace be with you brother. May you dwell in the house of The Lord forever.
Trust in The Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and He will make straight your paths.
    Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear The Lord, and turn away from evil.
It will be healing to your flesh
    and refreshment to your bones.
    Proverbs 3:5-8

This quote at the end is nothing less than purely truth. Our mind, will and emotions are fickle and deceitful above all things and who can trust them? We are not to feed this fickle flesh of human logic. The love most people talk about is a lust, erroneous and sensual love, but the Agape love that God speaks about is something so entirely different and it doesn’t come naturally for natural man to wrap his mind around. To understand this can only be from the Holy Spirit who leads and guides us into all truth.
This was a super read, thank you for sharing this!

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to read this Viv! I’ve been so busy with schoolwork lately.. >.< I completely agree with you in all that you’ve said. The mind cannot understand the things of the heart and the soul and the heart cannot understand the mind. The mind and the heart are on opposite ends of the spectrum so in a battle between the two, neither can be completely trusted. And it’s true, love and lust are confused so often these days, it’s truly unfortunate. For every time we use the word love incorrectly we are essentially diminishing it’s true meaning and taking away from the most beautiful thing in all creation. But soul, our spirit in conjunction with the Holy Spirit can lead us into absolute truth that can never be diminished or manipulated. Thank you once again! Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you have a great weekend! God bless you!
