Circles and buttons

Third in a series of encaustice works, this collage was inspired by two previous encaustic pieces (“Circles” and “Button, button”). It includes my current interests of melting wax, paper, and buttons which are all strong, dreamy memories of time spent with my grandmothers and parents in the 50s and 60s. Dad was a beekeeper and my female relatives were all ardent seamstresses.

collage of beeswax, paper, vintage buttons from my collection, inks on 5” square cradled board

Takes me back to my childhood. My mum always kept old buttons in a box and I’d spend hours playing with them. Nice use of beeswax.

Thanks so much! The buttons are from the button boxes of both my grandmothers and my mother. I loved playing with them too! (still do!)

Lovely picture….I was going to say same as Maria!!! But it was my nan’s buttonbox, I played around with for ages, it made a special sound too…...

How are you melting your wax?

  • AlteredIllusions replied

Thank you Tezz! I melt the beeswax in an electric pot, similar to a crock pot, but designed for candle making, It has two settings: melt and warm.

Another clever idea… I also love to combine various mediums to create a piece of artwork….. it’s wonderful experimenting with different mediums. I love the soft dreamy quality of this painting, it’s lovely :)
