we lifted a finger for pennies, fountains, and rockets
now it’s the squares of concrete in the modern man
drowning in sweet, softly sung monday morning air
hung from the necktie just to kick off the shoes
and sit to relax at the newspaper or television
i found “me”
in this mirror i left broken black and white 5 or so years ago
and as i’m walking, i can see it’s reflection
taking the sidewalk in the art gallery window
it seems he’s left home
but not for long
for a gulp of somewhere near his own likeness
in dark glass double door squares
signing autographs for time travelers
in neon red cursive under a moon so scheduled
as high as these pizza boxes stack
overflowing mud rivers of ribs
with a summer stool kicked out in proper manners
hi, it’s nice to meet you
myself, and well i once had nearly that very same haircut
and look in my new eyes equipped
as i set out like dinner, out of the shower
just waiting to dry
with my wings backing off backwards and slowly plucked
i’ll face my face of my mother and father
don’t run away…. yet,
a head start
this cage has opened
and be free
“cause… that’s where you’ll lose yourself”
it’s started at the beginning
all dressed up for the marriage
and someday someone’s childhood
it’s quiet there
and while distant, he is not alone
