The Thirsty Ocean

that’s what they tried to teach us was important in school
but really, they just want to pave roads to drive through traffic lights
and put their kids through college

i get sentimental on rainy days
we were born into our work uniforms
i was set to marry a slim girl with long dark hair and captivating brown eyes
but i’ve had to teach myself how to weigh mirrors properly
i’ve come to appreciate carrying water in my pockets
across bible school activity grass
well, so much for further than swimming pools and after bathing
or under park shelters out of the rain

only for as far as i can see into the sky
or past the flat line at the end of the ocean

so have gone the windows out of proportion
it’s the best i can bring you from this world they gave me
blessed with being confined to a mind
and it’s not so bad
we can even be friends
it’s amazing what we build up for ourselves
just expect the unexpected
and i should’ve been writing these prose
to be put on blogspot since i was thirteen
yet it’s always perfect
and the timing’s just right for acceptance for the way things are
and finding it in one’s self to wish them no different
is it rude to write a book if you’ve never read one?
it’s not easy to fully take the human condition into consideration
whether you’re a wonder or not
everything’s attractive from the right amount of steps back
to where we can hardly acknowledge what sticks
the farther the quicksand sinks
pulling us through the tight crannies and long falls of an hour glass
into it’s systematically chaotic rotations
scientists are now commonly referring to it as space
i suppose it doesn’t matter how you’re thought of
it’s that you’re being thought of
as i’m stood bare naked
communicating with those around me
live from my skeleton under my skin

Artist's Description

word one was originally written with the first stanza, which i came up with as i was going to sleep and i couldn’t remember quite all of it once i woke up and that was originally the whole poem. i thought it really wasn’t quite long enough so i sat to write the second stanza and i soon stopped to go to bed, i think. after i woke up again i sat to write something new, but upon re-reading, i didn’t find “or under park shelters out of the rain” to be a suitable ending. the third smaller stanza came as i was retyping this. the fourth and longest stanza came not two long after the second. once again, it was written separately and then i attempted to tie it all together. so this was written over a couple of days and originally by typewriter.
