What is a Witch?
In modern days, many people are taking the title of Witch. Why would a person chose such a name, such a label that carries with it such controversy? Is it for attention? Is it to empower the person? Or is just fantasy play to escape the realities of daily living?
Why do people feel the need to adopt such a label in modern times? What is it about the label of witch that draws people to adopt it or place it upon their sense of identity? These are a few of the questions I will address in this article plus much more, to seek deeper truth and meaning of the choices we make and their influences in our daily lives.
Within the occult or witchcraft, there are a variety of tools that are available to the practitioner or (Witch) to enable one to seek deeper information. Answers to things, which they previously may not have had access to. Tools such as Numerology, Astrology, Correspondences, the Elements, and the Tarot, which all provide keys or a means to discovering deeper knowledge and the inner connections to all things.
So let’s begin by using some of these tools to explore the hidden meanings of the label Witch and to perhaps come to understand why so many have decided to use this label.
We will begin in numerology and through the calculations obtain the expression number of the word Witch. The expression number reveals the physical and mental constitution, the orientation or goal. Some numerologists refer to this number as the Destiny number, because it represents a target at which the word is aiming at.
The influences of the word, in this case the word ‘witch’, work at fulfilling a specific potential every day of life. Thus, the Expression number reveals the inner goal that the person carrying the name aims to be.
The Expression number also reveals the talents, abilities, and shortcomings. The name (in this case “Witch”) and the numbers derived from it, reveals the development, as well as the talents and issues you will be working with during the time period you chose to carry this label.
So in consciously choosing a label you are choosing to accept and work with the influences that such a label will bring into your life. You will come to understand the basic nature and the abilities and issues inherent and associated with it. For some people they are born with a number that resonates to the same frequency, and hence the saying of a person being a natural born.
In this case a person born with the number 9 frequency will often be called a Natural Born Witch as the label of Witch resonates to the expression number 9 frequency. And a person who already resonates to the number 9 also deciding to take the label of Witch will intensify the influences already present in their lives.
So what are the influences of the number 9? There are many various websites, books etc., which can be explored to discover such information.
Personally I enjoy using the software from decoz.com and as such will use it to provide you with their understanding of the 9 expression:
“Witch, you are the humanitarian. You are attracted to a cause or a movement whose purpose is to make a better world. You are extremely idealistic, sometimes to the point of being naive about people or methods. You have great compassion and seek to create a more humane society. You are drawn to those who suffer physically or are at the hand of injustice. You are the righter of wrongs. Your deepest intention is to transform the world.
You are willing to sacrifice in order to advance your cause. Indeed, this seems to be a theme in your life. From time to time, you find yourself involved in a project whose very life depends upon your willingness to sacrifice something that relates directly to your ego.
You are highly idealistic. You are also a visionary, with the ability to influence and direct the masses. Deep inside, you long for the love and approval of the many, and seek fame. Part of your hunger for fame has to do with your need for validation; you are your own harshest critic.
“Witch, you realize your greatest satisfaction when you are involved in some activity that directly benefits the public good. Politics, law, protection of the environment, teaching, and healing are areas in which you would succeed.
You have a broad view of humanity and are not shackled with prejudice. You should have friends and associates from all walks of life, all colors and religious backgrounds. People fascinate and enrich you. A wide diversity of people and experiences stimulate and bring forth qualities within you that would otherwise lay dormant.
You have an abundance of artistic talent. Many with your Expression number find themselves in the arts, especially in literature, painting, and the visual and performing arts.
The number 9 indicates the completion of a cycle or a block of learning. The 9 Expression suggests that you have reached the point where a breakthrough can occur. During this lifetime you can apply all that you have learned along your evolutionary path and complete a major stage in your development. This is why we find many geniuses with the 9 Expression.
You have the ability to synthesize many diverse bits of knowledge into a unified whole.
Witch, your appearance is important. You are keenly aware of how others perceive you.
As a result, others see you as a person with a great deal of control. Conversely, you are charismatic. Despite the cool and distant personality you project, people are attracted to you.
You tend to express your love somewhat impersonally. You tend to be preoccupied with your vision or cause, and sometimes overlook the needs of those closest to you. You need to be reminded to give your love more personally and more openly. Ironically, you are a very loving and sincere person, but often neglect to express what you truly feel.
In the same way, you can overlook your own needs. You can avoid sharing of your deeper feelings, creating a reservoir of emotion. You tend to postpone your personal satisfaction in favor of some larger work. Try to be more spontaneous and courageous about showing your real self, including your vulnerability.
Your basic belief in the goodness of humanity is unshakable. This causes you to encourage the best in people, but occasionally makes you vulnerable to being taken advantage of.
The surest way to personal satisfaction is for you to become part of some larger social cause. Your nature is to serve. You are happiest when you feel you are helping to advance the human race.”
So according to this particular information a Witch doesn’t sound so scary in fact shows that the person who takes the label of Witch is aiming at some pretty large goals for all of humanity through the action of service.
But this is not all; there is more we can learn about the label of Witch by using the knowledge found within numerology and expanding on it into astrology. Being that the word Witch resonates to the influences of the 9, in astrology that would correspond to the 9th house, the house of Philosophy.
Here is some information to deepen your knowledge of the 9th house and its influences by choosing to take the label of Witch, provided by:
http://www.astrology.com/aboutastrology/interpreting/houses/
“The Ninth House
House of Philosophy
The Ninth House is commonly referred to as the House of Philosophy. In keeping with that theme, it’s our search for meaning which is the focal point here. By virtue of exploring our world, we start to grasp everything that is available to us. It all boils down to understanding: understanding that which we see and feel and probing further in the hopes of realizing true meaning.
Through higher education, we have the hope of understanding concepts and theories, which will enhance our world. Whether it’s philosophy or psychology, the Ninth House reminds us that we are on a voyage of discovery.
Along that road, we will come face-to-face with our ideals and further shape the ethics by which we live.
Another approach to clearer meaning and understanding of that which we see, and more importantly, that which we do not see, is through religion. Understanding and accepting that which is greater than our world and us is key to the Ninth House.
Sadly, we might not always be humble in the face of what we have. A concrete understanding of the possibilities in life may well lead to ruthless ambition and greed and an over-expansion of the self. To face these demons most effectively in society, we institute laws.
These laws provide for the orderly and positive growth of that society. In much the same way, philosophy and religion help add focus and purpose to a productive society. How members of a society relate, and knowing and respecting the laws, by which they live, are core tenets of the Ninth House.
The Ninth House also addresses the way in which we expand our inner and outer lives. Travel and interaction with other peoples and cultures are a means to this end.
Our dreams, those that illustrate our past as well as those that speak to future events, also help to mold our being and our relationships. Taking this a step further, psychics as the bearers of relevant information also come into play.
Additionally, the Ninth House addresses publishing and multinational ventures such as import/export businesses. This House also has a multigenerational view, taking into account grandchildren, as well as in-laws. At the end of the day, however, the Ninth House is best described as philosophically inclined in the search for meaning and truth.
The Ninth House is ruled by the Sign Sagittarius and the Planet Jupiter.”
And if we explore a little deeper into the Planet of Jupiter, we can see what its influences bring to those who chose the label of witch, as provided by:
http://www.astrology.com/aboutastrology/interpreting/planets/jupiter.html
“Jupiter: Planet of Luck
Jupiter is the thinking person’s Planet. As the guardian of the abstract mind, this Planet rules higher learning and bestows upon us a yen for exploring ideas, both intellectually and spiritually. Intellectually speaking, Jupiter assists us in formulating our ideology. In the more spiritual realm, Jupiter lords over religions and philosophy.
A search for the answers is what Jupiter proposes, and if it means spanning the globe to find them, well, that’s probably why Jupiter also rules long-distance travel. In keeping with this theme, Jupiter compels us to assess our ethical and moral values; it also addresses our sense of optimism.
Luck and good fortune are associated with Jupiter for good reason. This is a kind and benevolent Planet, one that wants us to grow and flourish in a positive way. Jupiter may be judge and jury, but it’s mostly an honorable helpmate, seeing to it that we’re on the right path.
While our success, accomplishments and prosperity are all within Jupiter’s realm, this largesse can, at times, deteriorate into laziness and sloth (Jupiter, at its worst, is associated with weight gain!). More often than not, however, Jupiter will guide us down the primrose path.
Leisure time is also one of Jupiter’s pastimes. Sports of all kinds, games of chance, and a stroll in the park with the family pet (Jupiter loves animals) are all ruled by this Planet. Finally, Jupiter often presages great wealth, material and otherwise. This is a good friend in the heavens!
It takes Jupiter about twelve years to circle the Zodiac (the Planet visits an average of one Sign a year). It is masculine energy and rules both Sagittarius and Pisces and the Ninth and Twelfth Houses.”
So we have managed to deepen our understanding of the label of Witch through numerology and astrology by use of correspondences. However there is still more we can explore in understanding the influences at play with the number 9. We can also look to the tarot.
In the tarot the 9 resonates to the Hermit and contained within this card are the lessons, cycles of life, and influences.

DESCRIPTION
The traditional hermit is a crusty, bearded character who has withdrawn from the company of men to live a life of seclusion and hardship. Card 9 supports this understanding.
The Hermit represents the desire to turn away from the getting and spending of society to focus on the inner world. He seeks answers within and knows that they will come only with quiet and solitude.
There comes a point in life when we begin to question the obvious. We sense that there is a deeper reality and begin to search for it. This is mainly a solitary quest because answers do not lie in the external world, but in ourselves.
The hermit on Card 9 reminds us of Diogenes, the Greek ascetic who is said to have gone out with a lantern in hand to search for an honest man. Diogenes is a symbol of the search for truth that the Hermit hopes to uncover by stripping away all diversions.
In readings, the Hermit often suggests a need for time alone – a period of reflection when distractions are limited. In times of action and high energy, he stands for the still center that must be created for balance. He can also indicate that withdrawal or retreat is advised for the moment.
In addition, the Hermit can represent seeking of all kinds, especially for deeper understanding or the truth of a situation. “Seek, and ye shall find, ” we have been told, and so the Hermit stands for guidance as well. We can receive help from wise teachers, and, in turn, help others as we progress. “
And last but not least we can discover what type of Witch a person is.
Discover your personal ruling element through astrology. Now I prefer to use sidereal astrology and according to such I am a Taurus.
Taurus is an Earth sign, which would mean through correspondences that I am an Earth Witch. Those areas of study for me that would hold the greatest interest personally would involve all the attributes associated with the Element of Earth.
To further your personal studies about the elements, there are a variety of books, websites, etc., I personally recommend reading The Way of Four by Deborah Lipp, Llewellyn Worldwide 2004.
So from all the resources above we can come to understand what the label Witch will bring into the lives of those choosing such a label.
But what of those who are considered “evil” or bad or negative witches?
Personally I feel that those people are experiencing and expressing the immaturity that comes with all things and will eventually balance the negative expressions. It is a process of growth and with all things both the positive and negative aspects also known as the mature or immature aspects of being will express themselves at times.
So to address the original question of what is a Witch? A Witch is a person who is a humanitarian who chooses to serve and sacrifice, to create a better world through using such tools as inner reflection and solitude, to uphold a set of ethics and moral values, one who explores, who discovers understanding and acceptance through seeking deeper truths.
A Witch is a person who loves the world, which also includes animals. A Witch’s intention is to transform the world for the benefit of all.
So why would a person take the label of Witch?
Would you?
Angelique Moorman, 5 months ago
Not your whole story I read yet, but you asked me to join this group of Pentacle Passions and I accepted. My whole life I was called a witch. Even at kindergarten, all schoolyears long and even now that I have children of my own. Not that I am a witch, no, people give me that name and I was never offended by it, more the opposit, I was pleased. Never I was active as a witch, but I think my nature is somewhat like it, being charmed by nature, love for Mother Nature, healing herbs, trees, etc. The only thing I was trubbled with were the spells, the rituals, so I never started to join a group. But loving Mother Nature, in buddhisme Tara, is very important for me.
Greetings from Holland, Angelique

Thank you Angelique for your comments…. Not all witches do spells or rituals…. but some do and that would also have to be defined as what people believe a spell or ritual is. Peace to you in your journey, thank you for sharing.

Hi Aloramyst, there are many types of witch these days and you come across as well grounded. As you may have worked out by now i use the lable Hedgewitch or Hedgewych or Green Witch in some US Publications. In many ways the Hedgewitch is a soletery witch coosing to work alone than in a covern. And this is the path that found me, as a youngster i lived in the country and i roamed for miles and started learning the names of plants and birds and other wildlife. what i didn’t know at that time was the fact that my fathers mother was a true Romany and so you could say it was in my blood. And by chance i bumped into this old hermite like tramp who fed my passion to learn maybe it was two outsides seeing that in each other. but before i knew it i was nursing sick wildlife and farm stock. He was in many ways a mentor and responsable for my first tarot. As our custom is you should never buy you own they will be given when the time is right. It was at this point i found my fathers roots as my mother discovered the Tarot and burned them. She sore them as witchcraft and as she was born again she would never have such things in her house. With all that has happened with the dark arts group i thorght it was relivant to tell my story. Over the years my mum has mellowed and i’ve remained true to my path and even used it in my work as community development work. Now with the fibromialga i express myself in my art work and garden. I have herbs for every possible use and still take in sick wildlife and every stray cat for miles seem to find its way to my frount door. I look forward to seeing what other types of witch comment on your well put across reason for taking the term witch for themselves.

Thank you Cherrie for sharing your path and history with me. I am a solitary pagan witch, and I walk my own path where ever that may lead me with the joy of having met other people and their expressions of the craft as well. This article was originally posted on Witchvox, but due to the latest events here on RB, I decided to post it here as well. I do understand if others do not wish to add their voice to this and do appreciate it when others chose to. Thank you once again for sharing.

Hi my dear friend and what true and wonderful words you speak! This is what Witch means to me!
“As I walk through the mists of my mind and inhale the Great Spirit. A tear of the purest elemental Water fell from the invisibility of Air and awakened my soul from within the Mother Earth, and it is here that Fire blessed my name “Witch!”
Peace be your journey!

Your contribution to our society is greatly appreciated. The definition of what we are, whether we use the title or not, has been very well written, is easily read, and improves the potential for the understanding of our reality for those who chose to retain the baggage of the superstitious past.
Thank you for your eloquent posting. It is an honor to read it. ~S

You know I would, and did, take that title, Alora, after a long struggle to understand myself and why I was different. Although I always knew I was a Witch, and finally embraced the understanding of what this meant long before making your cherished acquaintance, you have helped me to understand myself in a way that even all my studying couldn’t clarify in quite the way you have done.
I am so very glad you’ve shared this here at RB.
Thank you! )O(

I had always flirted with the idea of “taking a walk on the wild side” so to speak. Starting out as an atheist, I converted when I was properly introduced to the goddess, because I had found everything I wanted in a religion. I am proud to call myself a witch, to work the craft, and to wear a pentacle.
I knew from the moment that I dedicated! I asked the Lord and Lady to be with me and all the birds flew away, the wind stopped, and my candle cracked in half.

An excellent informational article, my dear friend. I wanted to know what “witch” meant to you, and it means what I thought, all the good things. My step-daughter and her husband are both witches. I know that when we do come to a time of reconning, we’ll be judged by our actions and how we treat our fellow man -and woman. We already know most of what the other one knows, from different sources. And we already understand service the same way. it’s no great wonder we hit it off. -=DS

Glad to hear you enjoyed the article! It was one of those things that just needed to be explained from my perspective. I get that question alot! lol
