one of the new desert drawings series .
In the old days in the Arabian Gulf , people used to make their homes and their household from palm trees , as you see here the wife would weave the dry strands of palm leaves together to create what they need , mats to set on , baskets,food cover,dinning mats” the round thing behind her ” used on the floor as a dinning table, also the walls of the home made of the branches of the palm tree.
they also colored some of the strands with natural dyes.
This is what the palm leaves weaving looks like .

Does she have a band of material on her nose and mouth because of the dust? Her outfit looks beautiful, I love how you drew the fold and the texture of the material!! :O

Thank you , what she has on her face is a traditional mask women back then used to wear , now days you can still find some very old women wearing that type of mask, it is made of this paper like metallic fabric.

Ahh, when I went to Dubai, I was surprised to see some old women with an interesting masks made of a metal structure indeed, covering the mouth, it had actually a bit the shape of a moustache. I did think it was metal, it is fabric then? What is the origin of these?
I did not take picture of people then, because I did not know if it would be perceived as rude or offensive. I always abstain in case of doubt. However I thought it was really interesting.

Oh you have been to Dubai then .. great , yes these mask made of fabric that looks like hard shiny paper , it would have been bad move to take photos of these women they would be offensive to them , but there are places in Oman you can meet these people and talk with them and even will let you take a photo of them.

Ah, I did good then! :) I really thought it was metal!
I crossed Oman to go snorkelling around Snoopy Island, but did not actually get into it, I have to save it for another trip! A freiend of mine went and absolutely loved it,,,,

Snoopy island got a hard hit last year , there was huge storm, damaged a lot of the underwater life on the east cost of the UAE & Oman.
