Page 1 on Google? by Mark  Allen

Posted on March 28, 2009

I am a retired web designer. I still keep ‘my hand in’ by keeping up to date with pro bono sites, and a few that I am interested in. Almost all my sites get on to page one of GoogleUK, some are number one on page one! How can this be done without paying someone loads of money every month? Read on for some simple, but I am sure you will find, most effective tips.

1. The first tip is very simple, get whatever you think might use as a search term in your domain name. This why many photographers use theirnamephotography.com. The same approach applies to any web site, say you want to sell fluffy widgets in the UK, then you would try and get that into the domain name, fluffywidegtsuk for example. As RB members are more likely to want a name like ‘joe bloggs photography’, I will use this as an example. But clearly the same approach will work for whatever you want to promote.

2. The second tip builds on the first and can seriously boost your rankings without falling fowl of search engine spamming rules. Rename every image to include joebloggsphotography, that is every photo, image element, etc.

3. Many web sites use spacer or shim gifs, rename them joebloggsphotographyshim or joebloggsphotographyspacer.gif

4. HTML offers you the facility to include alt and title statements on every image, again rename them all to include joebloggsphotography.

5. If you have a large existing site doing all this will take time and it may the case of ‘if I was going there I wouldn’t have started from here’ sort of thing. The quickest way to update an existing site along this method is to use Dreamweaver.

6. Dreamweaver allows for a template to cover – usually, the top, sides and bottom of the page and the middle or centre bit is what makes every page different. Every time you update your template, Dreamweaver updates every page on the site, in seconds. I would never build a website without using a template.

7. If in Dreamweaver your website is managed as a ‘site’, then from Dreamweaver you just rename the image files, one by one, and every time you do this the image is renamed (by Dreamweaver) in every page on the current site. This is a very speedy way of changing the names of files and means that if you find that if your work has not had the result (with the search engines) that you expected, then you can try again with a different key word.

8. Last Tip, Google offer a range of webmaster tools, they are free and easy to use. For example setting up a google site map with increase the speed that google collects info from your site.

I hope this helps…

That’s great advice! If I ever get around to doing a site I will do that for sure.

  • Mark Allen:

These tips avoid what Google calls spam. If the Google spider engine suspects spam* then your site will be ignored at best, or moved to the bottom of the list at worst.

The most common mistake people make is to type in keywords in white, on a white background so they cannot be seen. But they are picked up by Google’s spiders and immediately rejected.

Thank you Mark. When it comes to potential web sales, I am fearing, one is less and less able to differentiate based on photo skills alone.

  • Mark Allen:

Correct! It is all about being seen by the search engines. If you are not on the map then you simply will never receive a visit! You could have the very best of photography on the planet. But unless you are on the map then all this work will be meaningless.

Read again: You could have the very best of ANY PRODUCT/SERVICE on the planet. But unless you are on the map then all this work will be meaningless.

That is why you need to know some simple tips to get your website on the MAP! ( i.e. Google)

thanx for this great info…when my name is searched in google it does come up number one in the searches…..we created my webbie using Dreamweaver i’m pretty sure…..for a long time the ‘other’ karin taylor who is very famous came up pages and pages ahead of me, after a couple of years i started ranking above her, and now am coming in at No.1, that’s pretty cool…….my webbie name is artbykarintaylor.com

  • Mark Allen:

get ‘artbykarintaylor’ into every one of your images. If you are using DW and have your site classed as a ‘site’, just rename the image (from within DW) and DW will update all the html for you! The same for alt and title tags.

okey doke, that’s great thank you for the additional tip!!!!!! much appreciated mark!!

  • Mark Allen:

of course you will have to upload all the new renamed images to your web site, as well as the html main pages ;-)

Some good tips here Mark, but there are a couple of issues I’d disagree with, being a developer myself…

As far as naming conventions go, I’d stick to fluffy-widgets-uk instead of fluffywidgetsuk – that way you’re differentiating and separating important keywords, instead of combining them into one word wihich people are unlikely to search for (and search engines will recognise these individual keywords too, helping your ranking).

Secondly, I’d seriously advise against using shim / spacer gifs if possible. They’ll only add an increased load on the server, and it’s much better using CSS for the spacing / presentational aspects of the site. Websites built using HTML / XHTML and CSS tend to be more search engine friendly, purely through the act of separating content from structure.

Hope you don’t mind me chipping in with my two cents worth…

    Dan

I agree, but if your site does use shims and so on…

Hey Mark, I have an online shop and webpage.. Since joining Red Bubble i just love there simple clean approach.. Do you have any idea what templates they use in creating the Red Bubble site? View my sit HERE

  • Mark Allen:

This a flash site, so you should rename the swf file to fit with what you think folk will search for.

I followed your advice yesterday and now my site is way more visible! Thanks for the valuable information!

  • Mark Allen:

Great news Christopher. If it is more visible after just a day, wait a while and see how it climbs the search engine results page. I use this approach on all my sites and all are on page one of google, many at the number one spot!
