In its time Islay House would have been one of the the grandest houses in Woodend, Vic, Aus. Now it is past its prime and derelict.

Islay House was built in 1864 and is a two story brick “Georgian” building that first traded as a licensed premises serving alcohol to the gold diggers going to and from the Bendigo goldfields.

Some extra info I found-
The Argus, Wednesday 15 February 1882
Death notice.
GILCHRIST.—On the 31st ult., at Islay-house, Woodend,
Elsie Mary, the infant daughter of John and
Christina Gilchrist, aged seven months.
Further googling and I found this.
John Gilchrist migrated from Port Ellen to Woodend where he ran a general store.
Port Ellen is a small town on the island of Islay, in Argyll, Scotland.

This house is now for sale so hopefully it will be restored lovingly… though I have to admit I love it like this.

This is so like some of the homes in Charleston SC. I just love the old world look Maree. Yes I said old world because I don’t know what century it is. However you have really done a great job with the clarity. Was it abandoned?

  • Thanks Very much Donna. I think it would prob be late 1800s but I’m only guessing. I love beautiful places like this too. See the notice on the door? It’s a statement from the bank that they have reclaimed it due to mortgage not being paid etc. Some of the windows are broken. I poked my camera through the bottom left one and took a couple of quick shots and there’s old furniture stacked up. I WANT TO GO IN AND HAVE A GOOD LOOK!!! lol.

WOW If you would share with me an address of where it is I might have a search done to locate the owner " – )) Cheers Steve i live in Kew in Melbourne Id love to go see it .

  • Steve, I zoomed in on a couple of my pics on the notice on door, but can’t make out the details. I don’t live in Woodend, so the best I can give you is the main st, Woodend. You could try contacting a couple of the Woodend real estates and asking them what they know about it. If you show them this pic they will definitely know the place. There’s a HUGE amount of work to be done. Inside looked pretty grim from what I could see. Good luck. (Done up. it would make a great B&B)
