Sargent Preston: First Love by

Sargent Preston: First Love. this is the shepard that started it all. He was Steve’s first dog ever, and he was in love. Problem was he was in the service at the time and lived alone in a very isolated area, after 6 mo Sargent turned mean and was a one man dog. I met him after we were engaged, and as a welcome to the party he bit me. We did keep him and one day he and I had it out, face to snout and I won, I never had a problem with him after that, he was a love and a beautiful dog, even if the only people that ever got to see that side were Steve, his Mom and He lived 11 yrs, and Steve has always kept a German Shepard since.

German Shepards can be quite hard headed. They are very loyal though. Beautiful work.

Gorgeous portrait of a beautiful dog! He looks so much like mine. She lived to 10 1/2. She was my drill instructor, getting me up every morning for a early hike, no matter what the weather.

Beautiful Shepherd and I enjoyed reading his history. Sargent Preston reminds me of my first Shepherd, Target, as she didn’t let strangers handle her or come near me. I always felt safe with her and her sister, Gypsy, who was also quite protective. Thankfully, the vet that I had at that time had been in the army and had experience with dogs like mine. I had to take Target to a specialist when she was less than a year old and the vet was so terrified of her that he evacuated his waiting room and would not get anywhere near her. His face was ashen white. Fortunately, her condition was one she’d outgrow. She sure was the love of my life and so was her sister Gypsy. We kept these dogs safe and secure from the public. Target passed away in her sleep at 12 1/2 yrs old sleeping next to me and Gypsy lived another 2 yrs and passed at age 14. I adopted my Shepherd Gretta that same week and we are just as close. My little family grows as does my welcoming party at the Rainbow Bridge. Someday, some wonderful glad day we will be re-united, NEVER to part again!

  • Vivian thanks for sharing your story I have had 2 GSD that were a handful and just plain looked scary to others. Thing is I think people know thier dogs and will move heaven and earth to keep others and ultimately the dog from harm. I have to say I kept both locked down pretty tight. We just got a new GSD puppy this weekend and we are trying to get her socialized. Kinda hard to do with all the potty training going on!!!!

What a beautiful painting…and a lovely story….Just curious, I couldn’t tell if this was a traditional painting or done with a computer…? No matter, a lovely work! As a kid, I grew up with two wonderful shepherds…they are for sure the most intelligent, loyal, and loving of all dogs.

  • This one is illustrated in CS6. They are a wonderful breed. We have a new puppy and even as a pup you can tell there is a certain proud dignity about them. Thanks for you kind words
