Millions of children live in the slums of major cities around the world. This image reflects the face of one such girl in the slums of Mumbai. She is called Narmada, which means ‘One who arouses tender feelings in others’. She is about 12 years old.

This insert from fuzonlab -
Narmada is a river in India… one among the few of most sacred and worshiped rivers as a matter of fact… Narmada is 1350 km long and througout its course it is worshiped as a goddess… it is considered to be a caring mother and not just a river… thus in connection to your desciption, it is indeed the one which arouses tender feelings in others…So people in India (especially central India, where The Narmada is born and then runs through the Central India), name their children after the river… Narmada has several othernames too… like Rewaaa, Maikal-suta etc…When I visit Narmada, and was sailing through one of its tributories (this tributory river was called “Sip”) in a local tribal boat, I asked the tribal lady “What is the difference between “Sip” and “Narmada”??…
And the lady said… “Sip is a river… and Narmada is our mother…”
