Kiama Blow Hole

Kiama Blow Hole

Orton Effect applied.

F/stop: f/8
Exposure: 1/250
ISO: 200

Taken at the RedBubble Illawarra Group meet-up on Sunday 8 November 2009.

Under the right conditions, large waves enter the mouth of the Blowhole & compress the air within the inner cavity. As the retreating water leaves, it is forced upward by the compressed air, as the mouth is still blocked by the receding wave. The escaping air causes the loud “oomph”, which accompanies the water spout.

The main Kiama Blowhole was discovered by George Bass on his voyage of coastal exploration on December 6, 1797, after anchoring his whaleboat in the sheltered bay which became Kiama Harbour.

Bass was not, in fact, the first to discover the Kiama Blowhole, as local Aboriginals had for generations referred to it as Khanterintee.

Kiama Blow Hole belongs to the following groups:

*Amazing Orton Effect* - Limit 3/day , Art By Bubble Hosts , Friends of RedBubble, Going Coastal (2 art per day), Illawarra , New South Wales Photography, Rural Around The Globe, Rural NSW and Seachanges Available for sale as

just looking at this, and just a split second glance has me in awe, i really love the abstract nature of the piece, how it is broken down to simple form within a frame.. sensational!
