Here's lookin' at you
I was looking for subjects to Photograph in my Parents’ garden and was about to put my Camera away when my Mum reminded me that there was a nest of Paper Wasps just above the door of the grannyflat in their house. I climbed up on to a ladder and slowly moved toward the Wasps. They weren’t at all fazed by my presence. I fired a test flash and they didn’t seem to care at all. Once I knew that they were relatively calm, I was able to snap off a few shots. I didn’t stay too long though, as I didn’t want to find out if their patience would wear thin! This shot was by far the best one of the day.

They are a very interesting creature. I found out after doing a bit of research that they gather fibres from dead wood and plant stems which they mix with saliva to construct water resistant nests! I was there for long enough to be able to watch them with some of this creation process.
Unfortunately they are not master engineers when it comes to attaching said nests to solid fixtures though. In the case of this wasp, their entire nest at its biggest was about 5 inches across and was held onto the wall by approximately half an inch of material!!

Thanks Jeffrey. I haven’t since captured an image like it, but waiting for that next elusive bug. I find that the more dangerous the creature, the more rewarding it is when getting an image like this. I don’t think I’d try it with something like a Brazilian Wandering Spider though!!! 0_0
