Polygonal Lasso Tool Question... by allisonberryart

Posted on December 05, 2007

Hi everyone,
I have been attempting unsuccessfully to learn how to use the polygonal lasso tool. Every time I get half way around a shape I somehow click twice and the lasso connects before I finish the edge. My question is this: is there any way to undo the lasso short of deselecting and starting over again. I am getting rather frustrated over the whole thing – it makes me not want to use this particular tool…

when that happens to me i just hold done the shift key and you can add the last half of your selection.

Do you know about adding to or subtracting from your selection? The buttons for these functions show up alongthe top left of the screen once you select the polygonal tool from the toolbox.

It’s better to select portions at a time, and then add onto that selection. This way if you make an error or the lasso goes bananas and outta control, you can step back a little bit, but not too much. And once you’ve done your main selection you can remove parts from the selection as well…

Also, try the help function. Photoshop HELP is fantastic. Just type the tool name into the search box and you can get a lot of informaiton on how to use it.

Yeah Melanie is right. Use the add and subtract facility. I also tend to use more than one type of selection tool when making a selection. Another goos thing to do is zoom in so you can see your edge really well, then when you need to move the picture along hold done the space bar and you can drag the picture across to the next section.

Keep using this tool. It is the one I use the most along with Quick Masking. One more hint – in most cases I ‘feather’ the lasso by 1 pixel – (in the tool bar at the top near the + and – buttons that Melanie was talking about). This stops your cut-out section for looking too sharp against the image below it. When the image is finally flattened I sometimes go around the edge with a 25% blur tool with a brush size just a bit bigger than the edge – this helps to ‘meld’ your selection into the image below and gets rid of those ‘jagged’ edges that you can see sometimes.

also if you can hold the space bar down and move your picture without clicking the lasso tool
    helps wonders with me
