Deep in Enemy Territory.........Geelong after the 2011 AFL Grand Final! by AllenGray

Posted on October 05, 2011

Now it must first be said that I’m not a AFL fan, far from it, I am what I freely confess to be a Rugby tragic and that I have no interest in AFL, a game I often refer to as Aerial Ping Pong. However, my wife on the other hand, despite having being brought into the light of Rugby by yours truly is also a Geelong Cats fan, and it was her idea that saw me grabbing the camera and heading down into what I regarded as enemy territory.

My wife said to me as I walked into the lounge that I should of been down at the Foreshore at Steampacket Gardens where the game was being shown on big screen by the City Council. As she remarked to me that I might get some good shots out of it, the thought started to take hold, and as the final quarter was dying, I headed down into the city, not knowing what to expect, but taking great pains to hide the Wallabies Rugby Union jersey that I was wearing, as the Wallabies had played Russia earlier in New Zealand as part of the Rugby World Cup. I quickly found myself in the middle of one of the maddest, craziest environments that I’ve ever been in, and found some great shots in the process! The last image actually wound up being used by the local paper, the Geelong Advertiser on a two page spread. So here is what I saw through the lens, deep in enemy territory as the cats fans partied!

It was one of the most amazing and craziest environments that I’ve shot in! But it was worth it, with the last image being used by the local newspaper as a two page spread!
