Wistful Girl Braiding Hair after Renoir

Renoir is one of my favourite artists and I’ve been working on my oil version of his painting Girl Braiding Hair for the past month.
It’s not an exact copy as I just couldn’t do it besides I have a natural inclination to elongate figures.
I started with a charcoal pencil sketch and you can see even though I thought it was a close rough sketch at the time, I had already naturally elongated the body.

Here is Renoir’s wonderful original for comparison and for your interest

Hope you like it as I thoroughly enjoyed putting away my 3D and going old schoo againl;)

    Thanks Alf, it’s much looser then Renoirs as during this period he seems to be into detail, like the leaves, but my thing is eye-squint effect and colour, if you know what i mean ;)

    I’m thinking more Modigliani that Renoir. Either way it’s a beautiful piece of work and would stack up alongside either of these guy’s work, seriously. X

    my gosh shanina.. what an incredible talent you have.. i had no idea…i actually prefer your rendition.. the softer lines and edges… for lack of a better word it appears more feminine… like you understand the subject matter better.. there is a quite aura around her…....... really beautiful work….... i don’t know that i would ever return to film/digital if i had your talent with a brush…......b

    Butch, thank you… the choice has almost been taken away from me as my old computer is spitting chips and it was great to get the feel back, so it’s back to the drawing board;)

    I’m a fan of Renoir myself Shanina.. but I have to agree with B :) I like your version better… she’s softer..and more feminine looking… I hope I don’t get struck by lightning for saying it.! You should go old school more often Shan, beautiful!! Wen xxx

    Your eye for slimming the figure is beautiful and certainly nothing that takes away from the astonishing beauty of the original. I ADORE Renoir and you captured her gorgeous eye shape.
