A Flock of Angels

A chance encounter in a supermarket gives a grieving man a message of hope.

A Flock of Angels belongs to the following groups:

Flash Fiction

Going on with life seemed pointless. What did I have left to live for? I’d lost everything; my home, my wife and children, all because a drunk driver had ploughed through our living room while I was at work.
My mind would not shake that horrible image. Coming home to find my yard fenced off with crime scene tape, officers held me back as tiny black body bags were wheeled out to a waiting ambulance. All I could think of was killing the bastard who’d robbed me of my happiness, but he was safely behind bars.
Now I was simply living on autopilot, continuing my life purely by instinct and habit. Stepping inside the bustling supermarket, I noticed an old lady watching me sadly. I looked at her questioningly.
‘You must be in terrible pain,’ she whispered.
‘How do you know?’ I demanded.
‘A flock of angels walk behind you.’

This is very powerful and effective writing, leading to a mind-expanding conclusion and the power of goodness overcoming negativity. Yay! I hope somebody will be inspired to create the picture of this grief-stricken man and his ‘flock of angels’.

How sad. I’ve heard of this happening in real life, that is, a car ploughing through someone’s house. Luckily no one was in the room, the car demolished, at the time. Effective writing alright :0)

This has brought tears to my eyes, I believe we do indeed have our angels.
If you would let me, I’d love to do a picture to go with your story.?

It reminds me of two things,
firstly, the tragedy that happened here a few years back where a young mum and her child were struck and killed while playing in their front yard, I never forget that.

and the second, something that happened here just before christmas.
We live in a beautiful scenic beachside town, and its roughly 40% locals and 60% holiday homes, which means we have alot of irresponsible hoons tearing up the roads around here.
We live on a corner, and the hoons love to do burn outs etc out the front.
So one friday night, there was alot of them, and i say to my other half “maybe we should move the car and park it in the drive? it mite get hit, I dont trust them”
and he thought about it and said, “i wouldnt worry about it”
so anyway, its just before christmas, now early hours of saturday morning, about 4am,
and i had been listening to a particular car goin nuts for about an hour, it had me worried more than usual, because they didnt sound like they were in control of it very well, i heard them almost crash a few times in the distance.
Then I heard them coming closer, i heard their music blaring, i heard the brief screeching and i heard them hit the round-about too fast, i heard them lose control and then it all happened too quickly.
    Horrendous sounds.
All the power went out, all i could smell was burning
All I could do was scrounge around in the dark for the house keys to unlock the door to get out
Didnt even realise I’d screamed out when it happened
All the street lights were out, i could see smoke everywhere
and then the scene became clearer, and my car was sitting in my front gate, totalled.
And their car was totalled, and they were drunk, 3 teenagers out joyriding
After i made sure they werent injured (very lucky boys) I started screaming at them “what were you thinking? I have a baby in there, you could of hit the house”. and the driver, classy act he was, did a runner.
Turns out they had stolen their mates car who was sleeping unaware at a party the other side of town.
They had lost control at the round about at the next road and stupidly tried to regain control by flooring it, bad move, they ended up ramming my car with such force that they totalled both cars (mine was a sturdy old solid celica) actually moving the celica about 12 feet and also took out the power line cables from the house and the very thick bunched up cables from the pole to the ground (the fines are huge when you take out power lines).
They took out the power to this town, and the surrounding towns!
So, yea, I had nightmares, awake and asleep, for ages after that, because simply, if i had of moved my car, they would of landed in my lounge, with that amount of speed and force that they’d hit us with
    (they never braked once)
All i could think was what if it was the house they hit
what if my girl had been in her portacot, which at the time was positioned on the outer wall of the lounge
what if my man was going to work that day, at the time he was startin his job at 4.30, he would be getting in the car at 4am normally, but he just happened to have had that satday off….
So i do believe in angels, and i believe they stopped me from moving my car that night.

Thanx again for posting such a beautiful piece of writing!

oh wow, i didnt think i wrote that much, sorry! you can delete it if you like! i dont mind!

  • Alison Pearce replied

I certainly won’t be deleting your wonderful comment! This is exactly what I was trying to express. Too many people have died in Australia in this senseless way. How do the survivors cope? That was what I wanted to explore, and it is my personal belief that angels will gather around those who need it the most, and that some people can see them. Thanks for sharing your story here Dimarie.

WOW…goose pimples all around me….this is how I felt when my marriage ended years ago. It is a type of loss like death. I would walk around hardly able to breath…only my children kept me going then…...the loss is great …..it brought it all back to me. Thanks for sharing.

Alison, can I just say I revisited this piece and it’s such a wonderful story; the wake up call for the protagonist, I think, has this beautiful imagery! :o) It’s going on my list for the book, that’s for sure. Fingers crossed.
