Twenty-Seven

Contours of the ancient mother land
Carved into the palm of his gentle hand
Brave as the eagle, flying so high
Dreams of freedom that could not be sent awry

Twenty-seven ravens crying for sorrow
Twenty-seven angels praying for tomorrow
Twenty-seven swords buried to the hilt
Twenty-seven tombstones looming on the hills

No cage could trap his spirit true
No barbed wire could imprison truth
His silence carried to the four points
Tolling the bells for ignorance

Twenty-seven lilies growing from the dust
Twenty-seven bars crumbling to righteous rust
Twenty-seven broken spears, but they will not regret
Twenty-seven years that no one shall ever forget

Map of freedom traced upon his face
Lines of black and white, an angels grace
One voice began a chorus; the world sang his song
Tune of peace never faltered, though the years were long

Twenty-seven warriors waging a silent war
Twenty-seven puppet masters falling to the floor
Twenty-seven eagles soaring through the sky
Twenty-seven angels smiling up on high

An ode to Mandela

Logan based writer, poet and artist. I seek with the pen and the brush. I think and it rolls out into words or strokes. I believe my writing should paint a picture and that my art should tell a story. I’m an uncomplicated woman in a very complicated way.
