‘Tell me where it is!’
‘Listen, kid,’ Reg lowered his voice to a threatening growl, ‘just forget what you thought you saw. It’s all just a bad dream. Tell me where you hid the gun or you won’t live to see your next birthday.’
Brad dashed the hot tears from his eyes and glared at his stepfather with loathing, ‘Then I guess I’ll see you in hell.’
‘Autopsy results are conclusive, sir,’ Detective Williams said, approaching the lead investigator, ‘It’s Brad Sommers.’
‘Cause of death?’ Inspector Johns tore his eyes away from the smug bastard smoking a cigarette in the interrogation room.
Reg Miller had been suspected in the shooting deaths of several people, including his wife and stepson, but the gun had never been found. Their evidence was circumstantial at best, and Reg knew it.
Williams shuffled uncomfortably, ‘The coroner has ruled it a suicide. Self inflicted cut to the throat.’
Johns cursed and kicked the wall. The boy’s death had been the closest they’d come to indicting Miller. He’d been seen arguing with the boy just an hour before Brad’s body had been found. Better evidence than they’d had thus far.
Clearing his throat, Williams continued softly, ‘That’s not all, Inspector. That email tip off was right on the money. They’ve found the gun!’
Johns immediately looked hopeful, ‘Prints?’
‘Miller’s,’ Williams confirmed with a nod, ‘There’s just one odd thing.’
‘The email was traced back to the source…’
‘Brad Sommers sent it…after he died.’
