Pastel Maypole

Alison Pearce

Logan Central, Australia

Artist's Description

Slightly abstract/stylised/Primitive Naive depiction in Montemarte watercolours on Hunter’s acid- free paper.
Maypole dancing is something I have fond memories of from childhood. At my primary school’s spring fair (incidentally not in May in the land down under!) we actually practiced and performed this beautiful yet complex rite.
The maypole dance has its roots in pagan Celtic traditions, where young women would actually dance around a living tree as a fertility rite.
It has evolved slightly over time to where the young women and girls dance around a tall pole usually topped with beautiful spring foliage. Each participant holds a ribbon – sometimes the dress and ribbons are bright and colourful, other times, the costume and ribbons would all be white – and weave around each other in a way that causes the ribbons to wrap around the tree or pole like a braid.
If you have ever seen this done, you would never forget it!
