Irony in the colour of iron, and yes, in military and totalitarian terms the word “peace” has always meant “victory”. Refering in an aside to the “peace sign” of V, the two fingers upraised by Churchill, this sign originated during the long wars between France and England during which archery was the dominant weapon and the French used to cut off the first two fingers of their English captives. So the English would go into battle with those two fingers upraised to show that they could still shoot arrows.
