'All this once belonged to Austria' by

Based on the quote of an ex-girlfriend of mine (she is Austrian). It made me think about what I knew about those ancient times when the Turkey army was robbing Austrian children to raise them and later deploy them as soldiers in the war against their parents. Austria, Habsburg, Spain, the one time owners of all of Europe and claiming the rest of the world as their own. The heir of the Austrian Emperor is still alive and a public figure, but I have been told that you may NEVER in any way address him in such a way that it may seem that you think or let other people think that he might have a claim to a throne that is no longer there. If you do that as a journalist it will end your career.

… so very INTERESTING ….. and also …. I can feel the old Austria (we Czech people do have ‘a thing’ about Habsburgs, too, I think …) and your friend being a present day person and the mixture of these two notions from your image – very well … amazing ….

  • The Dutch have fought the Spanish Habsburgs for 80 years – and we won, so there is not that much Habsburg influence/ sentiment running through our veins. I think Holland would be a much more colorful country if there was. During that war the Dutch also sold canons to the Spanish. We are always up for a profit. Maybe Startrek’s Ferengi were modelled after us :-)

This has a lovely feel to it – the textures, colours and details in the background are like a rich historic tapestry

  • Thank you! Actually, the background is made from several of the 100-something shots I made of a wall here in Berlin, in the entrance of the house of someone I know. There used to be carvings/ flat sculptures (what’s it called? ‘Reliefs’ in dutch, maybe also in French) on the wall, but someone tried to steal them (and removed them). They were not put back, but are still in the possession of the owner of the house. Anyway, there are also flowers and other plant / tree parts in there.
