View to Croagh Patrick from Achill by

Small Daily Drawing, shown actual size. 6 × 8″ pastel on sanded board.

I had a small gold plein air frame I decided to fill with something for my daily study. It will find a place at my current exhibition “Deep Heart’s Core: Ireland by 5 Chicago Artists” at the Beverly Arts Center in my neighborhood. The center will be well attended this week during the annual Chicago Irish Film Festival.

This is the view from the cliffs at Achill Island, Mayo, back to the holy mountain, Croagh Patrick.

I specialize in figurative charcoal drawing. My work was recently shown and sold at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Current works delve into the realm of symbolism and magic realism.
All of my drawings are meant to be noble representations of individual subjects, and also bring together a wealth of influences, recognition of art history and myth and a contemporary attitude to create images that are of the moment, but hopefully will also remain relevant in the future.

I love the feeling of distance created by the mountain in the background; well done!

  • Thank you Douglas! Not the best scrap to do this – a rough surface and too small. But at least I created :)

Hey I’ve been there you can see the mountain from my cousins house in fact you could climb from my cousins house, but I’ll leave that up to the pilgrims, what gorgeous part of Ireland.

  • No we didn’t climb more than a few minutes. I hear the view is spectacular though! :)

Alice the little bit of Irish blood I have thought, ‘deep’ They came out here as farmers a couple of generations ago. The size is not important some great artists have had success with very small.

  • Thanks so much Gloria! Hapy St. Pat’s Day to you – no matter how wee the bit o blood. :) xx
