"Spread Your Wings" Daily Drawing ~ study by

“Spread Your Wings” 6.5″ × 4.5″, 9 × 9″ overall, framed. Charcoal and white pastel on mylar drafting film.

I’m experimenting with creating a drawing in a day, and posting them to my blog, http://amwhitestudio.blogspot.com/

The next few Daily Drawings will be for the Black Butterfly series, as I have a show upcoming and I need to produce a few more pieces. I like these small works displayed in vintage table top frames. In the gallery they can be displayed on a pedestal as a sculpture would be. Today’s piece is my smallest ever, the head of the figure is only 1 inch in height. That means it’s not possible to get much detail. I am pleased with the rough effect that creates.

Titled for lyrics from another Van Morrison tune, Ballerina.

I specialize in figurative charcoal drawing. My work was recently shown and sold at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Current works delve into the realm of symbolism and magic realism.
All of my drawings are meant to be noble representations of individual subjects, and also bring together a wealth of influences, recognition of art history and myth and a contemporary attitude to create images that are of the moment, but hopefully will also remain relevant in the future.

Wow thats incredible Alice. Sooooo beautiful for something so small. A great concept too and looks lovely in the vintage frame- cant wait to see more xxxxxx

  • Hi Anita, thanks for that and for the fave. I have a few more of these frames to fill, but this was the smallest of them. A bit too small actually for a charcoal work, I think 10 × 8 is the smallest I’ll attempt from now on. My favorite Michelangelo quote: “I am still learning.” xx

  • Hi Rochele, I hope I’m impressed with my discipline in a few months! LOL. Today I’m actually working on a labor intensive large piece. Hope to do a “drawn in a day” piece tomorrow. I appreciate the encouragement!

I wish I could come see your show for this series when all is said and done! :) And where do you get your super awesome vintage frames?!?!?!

  • Portland, eh? I think I know a gallery director there. hmmmm…? :)

The hunt for frames is ongoing, and I’m beginning to deplete the supply in my area. I may be also antiquing in a town near you sometime soon. Thanks Fairy Queen! xx

ooh I’m going to have to ask you for some tips om lighting. Beautiful

  • I see you’ve been working on that Val, a very good idea. My current large work is paining me because the old reference of myself I’m using was shot with a flash and that really flattens things out and makes a likeness difficult to achieve. I’m trying to invent them, not too easy. I like to use filtered natural daylight from a single source whenever possible. So, not direct from the window, but the subject standing near the window. Portrait photographers here on the bubble would be more helpful for tips on artificial lighting. You’re off to a good start! Thank you Val!

Alice, I look at your work almost on a daily basis. I introduced pastel and charcoal drawings to my drawing II class about 4 weeks ago, and among the examples I showed them, yours were included! They especially loved the White Album series. You are a true inspiration, and I so admire the detail and delicacy of your work.

  • Ah Linda, you are always so kind and always brighten my day. Thank you for your encouraging words. The kids are lucky to have you for a teacher. Hugs!
