Thanks Thomas, I changed the pastel a bit from the photo reference, to keep the focus on the figure.

Great sense of movement and love the hand in front of the face, pope sick again…hmm any double meanings in there, like Pope wrong again, Pope insults our intelligence again or something like that?

  • Alice McMahon ... replied

You are very observant of details aren’t you Philip? :) That just happened to be the page my daughter was looking at when I took the snap – I was trying to catch her while she was reading, but she hates me always photographing her and has a sixth sense about it I guess. She covered her face just in time. Poor thing, her plot backfired and nearly all of the pieces of her in the series show her covering her face in some way. She even got into the spirit later in the series and posed for me with only minimal bribery required. As for the last late pope, yes, he was sick at the time – and I just thought it placed her in a certain era and also I liked how his waving hand echoed her hand. The viewer can interpret any other meanings however they see fit. I suppose I could redo this one by making some statement about war or something like that in the paper, it would fit better with the Beatles peace and love theme, but I’m now on to other things. Thanks Philip!
