Very impressive Alice. Are these oil pastels?
Alice McMahon ...
Thanks much James and Sean! Soft pastels.
Carson Collins
Very nice treatment of the water in the foreground. Also I love the lavender/brown vs blue/green you’ve used for the ocean.

Love the sky Alice :))

Thanks so much! This one sold first time out. Darn! I wanted to keep it a while. My fav spot in Ireland. I showed it in an antique frame.

Wow, Alice, I’m remembering the only time I went to Hawaii, I painted small 8×10 watercolors on different beaches, and was mystified how to paint waves in motion… finally got an understanding but they just won’t stand still. and I had no camera to help. I just love the little details that make that water look so wet!
Alice McMahon ... replied
Hi syd, just noticed this great comment – thank you! I honestly do not do plein air well. I could try more often I guess. This was done strictly from a photo – and it really wasn’t a good photo. It went really quickly to, allof a sudden I stepped back and said, wow! I like that, and it’s about done! A few final touches, and that was that. It’s a fairly large piece, 24×60” and remains one of my personal faves. (see my re to Kate below)
I admire you for trying to lasso the waves – and Hawaii?! Someday…
Kate Eller
aawww…..that’s a photo, right? Just kidding, but it does look so real. You’ve got the touch Girl. This is a beautiful piece of work. Sky, water, land…gorgeous.
Alice McMahon ... replied
Thanks so much Kate. I sold this the first time I showed it, and I could have sold it a couple of more times I think. :) I presented it in an impeccable vintage frame, it was one piece I was sorry to let go. I guess these are the types of sales an artist really has to think about when considering what to paint next. “what was it about that piece?”
I actually went back to Ireland a few times, and always searched for this type of moody beach scene, but never did capture another shot like it again. Oh well, I’ll keep searching! xx

This is incredibly beautiful, and I can see why it sold so fast and why you had a hard time letting it go. The size is also very impressive!

:) Thanks MS!!!
Leslie Gustafson
This is such wonderful work – the clouds and sea – so life-like!
Alice McMahon ... replied
I really appreciate your kind comments Leslie!
maria paterson
I love those overcast colours in the ocean, so much more intersting than a bright clear day, youve captured this beautifully
Alice McMahon ... replied
Thank you Maria! I took another trip to Ireland, with one motivation to capture another dramatic scene like this. We had too pleasant weather, and I chose a spot more like a harbor than a rocky shore. Doh! :) Someday…
Carolyn Bishop
It’s beautiful, Alice … and, congratulations!
Alice McMahon ... replied
Thanks Carolyn, but I gave myself the feature – it fit in with the stormy theme – lol. One advantage of being a group leader! :)

Lynda Robinson
This is definitely one of your best Alice! Congratulations on the placement in the challenge – I thought it would win!!!! I know that feeling of regret at selling something you are happy with that you mention above! You think you will do something similar ‘one day’ but it never works out quite the same!!!! I know I’ve seen this before so I can’t believe I haven’t commented before! (Maybe I’ve voted for it in another challenge before and I know it got my vote in this challenge). I love everything about this. The clouds are amazing and the colours and movement in the water are perfect.
Alice McMahon ... replied
Thanks Lynda, can’t expect to win a landscape challenge with you around! ;-) Cheers!
Claudia Hansen
Wonderful painting!!
