Black Butterfly
Charcoal on mylar drafting film, 22×18” The drafting film is translucent, so I have used a moonstone Canson pastel paper under the film for color. I work on the frosted side of the paper for tooth. The mylar lends a lovely soft effect, beautiful for rendering the translucence of skin. It is a tricky surface to work on, just a flick of the finger brings you back to the clean surface. I load my fingers with charcoal to get the soft gradations of tone.
There were several unusual spiritual moments for me while working on this self-portrait. One was a near out of body experience while on a walk in the park, which spurred me to write my first poem in 30 years. A few days later, I started seeing black butterflies. Not so unusual in summer I suppose, but I don’t remember seeing this particular type in Chicago, maybe it’s due to our changing weather patterns. The odd thing was that I had just found a photo of a black butterfly online at RedBubble at http://www.redbubble.com/people/knightingail/art/1336726-1-black-beauty Then a black butterfly fluttered around me several times while I was walking that same afternoon! It happened again a couple of days later, this black butterfly flying in loops around me as I walked. Odd that the only black ones I saw, also seemed to notice me as well! Almost like they knew of my transformation. So, that inspired my second poem, “Black Butterfly” and I decided to incorporate a black butterfly into the drawing. The piece was made to fit a vintage distressed frame I found at my local antique shop.
The Poem:
Bemusing muse
Black butterfly
Came through the ether
Mystical wings
Encircled me along the way
Enraptured on a summer day
Music painted on the sky
Black butterfly
Blown in from far off dust
Astral soul
Dressed in stardust
Black butterfly
Draw me perfect
Emergent from this coal black shell
Wet wings spread in joy to stand
Transformed
Flawless at the artist’s hand
Evanescent passion lies
In our wavelengths intertwined
Black butterfly
Never caught
Light gently in the mind
Bring luminous thought

Alice McMahon ... replied
Thanks Derek. This one is a departure for me, and I believe a good one. Writing the text to accompany the piece was an interesting exercise.

Wonderful self-portrait. Your comment on the black butterfly brought back something from my own experience that I need to ponder on (and perhaps write about). Whilst on a long (700km) journey recently, late afternoon, a rainbow appeared … it emerged from the front bonnet of the car and circled round the drivers seat to re-enter the car at the rear passenger door. It was amazing. And no … I was not on anything.
Alice McMahon ... replied
Woah! That is wild! Definitely something to inspire a poem there! Thanks for writing! ~ Alice

I always love your paintings and this one in particular seems so beautifully real that it feels almost tempting…
BTW of butterflies, I had a somewhat similar experience this summer with a monarch butterfly in my backyard: when I saw it, I didn’t have the camera with me, I was just about to not even try to go and get it, thinking that it won’t be there when I return. But in my mind, I told the butterfly to wait there for me, I went into the house, the camera had the battery on charge, so it took much longer to have it ready, went outside having the “premonition” of disappointment, and yet the monarch did not even move from that leaf. I started taking pictures, and after a short while it flew a few times in small circles and returned in almost the same spot and as soon as I said to myself I have taken enough pictures, it flew away and did not return. Coincidence? Fluke? This I may never know, but I’d like to think that it was neither, but a kind of strange communication taking place… or just my imagination!
Alice McMahon ... replied
Wow! I had a similar experience to yours! A yellow swallowtail butterfly in my back yard, it waited for me to get the camera too, but unfortunately it was camera shy :( But it did do a dance with me before taking off. I also had monarch encounters this past season, even after the first frost. I can’t explain any of these experiences, it was my year for butterflies. The season is past, but the series will continue.
What a wonderful comment and I’m blushing from your compliment. Thank you Vasile!

Simon Aberle
Great self portrait, very interesting story, I am currently undergoing spiritual enlightenment and transformation for the first time so I can definitely relate. Beautiful poem too. I love your work :)
Alice McMahon ... replied
Awesome Simon. I think I started the spirituality when my husband converted to my faith, Catholicism. Neither of us are practicing any longer, but the meditation, symbolism, ritual, etc, stays with you deep in the soul. I like to think that comes out in the work. Ideas are even more important than skills in my view. I should make tome to meditate more often. But RB is so much fun!
Thanks so much for spending time with each piece. Means so much to me.

Really nice, beautiful model and interesting technique. I have worked on some unusual surfaces, but I hadn’t heard of this method.
Alice McMahon ... replied
Mylar is a fun surface. I like playing with the translucent quality using underdrawings, etc. Thanks for spending time and for your wonderful remarks Ken. I took a quick look at your website – great work and you certainly are prolific! Not sure where to begin! I’ll be watching you.
kenmeyerjr
Yeah, you know, now that you mention it, that surface could allow for some cool stuff underneath it…what some people will now do with photoshop, I guess. Lately, I have had fun with mixed media, transfers, stuff like that.
