Featured in Lumix Lovers" on October 2010 and Art in Math on November 7, 2011. Thank you!

You ever have something irresistible in your life, that no matter what you do you’re drawn right to it? That’s what I feel is happening with these strands of duct tape. Some veer off, some remain straight. They all rush left to right, though.

This is actually the taped up bottom of a trailer used by a local county jail. Used to haul all the work tools for offenders doing community service.

Nice pattern, didn’t really care what is was.

  • Ja, describing the image is something I’m a little on the fence about. On one hand I want to so as to prove this and my other abstract / conceptual work has a place in reality. On the other, I don’t know if revealing the image for what it is strips it of its effect, which should be primarily visual.

Something to figure out in the future. >_>

Richard, It’s good to read how someone else finds lowly duct tape…or any object not commonly thought of as artful…..to be artful. It’s not what the object is….it’s how you see it……and you’ve seen it well!

  • I can’t imagine the number of people overlooking this batch of tape in particular. Like I said it was slapped onto a broken trailer panel used by the local county jail. I doubt the prisoners and guards who got all the misc. utilities out of the trailer for landscaping, trash pickup, etc saw the tape as anything more significant than its immediate use. But your words echo part of my motivation as a photographer. I’m glad you share that mindset. nods

Many thanks for your comment and wisdom, Pete.

99% of photographers would have walked right by, you see the trees in spite of the forest. nice eye and the variety of color and texture make this one fine photo…congrats

  • Thank you for your comment, hp, and I apologize for how long it took me to respond to it. I knew of your comment for several weeks now, but it slipped my mind because of offline demands. I am grateful you stopped by, though, and doubly so for what you wrote. :)

In the thumbnail I thought you’d photographed a line-up of red chillies – but duct tape? Great surprise! I totally agree that a large part of the buzz is seeing the magic in the mundane!

  • You are very wise to believe that. And ah yes…another person fooled into thinking duct tape was a vegetable. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

    :P
