During the colder but drier autumn/winter months the Rural Fire Service in New South Wales and National Parks & Wildlife carry out hazard reduction burns in critical areas. Such burns reduce the fuel load.

Taken in mid-May 2011, this dramatic image looked just like this as I saw it while standing next to a bush firefighting tanker. The yellow figure in the smoke is a volunteer bush firefighter walking towards the burn to inspect it for safety.
