Sunflowers by Alex Burke

Sunflowers by

Sunflowers on display at Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado. It seems odd to find flowers growing on the tallest sand dunes in North America, but they add just one more aspect to the uniqueness of the park.

Taken with a large format 4×5 film camera and Velvia 100 transparency film.

Superb again Alex. If you don’t mind me asking Alex, I’d love to know more about the equipment you’re using. I’ve been obsessed with medium format for the last year, but I can definitely see LF in my future, the image quality and movements are amazing

  • Thanks again. Sure thing, I got started with large format using a Crown Graphic. It was very inexpensive and was a great way to get started with 4×5. I decided that I wanted more movements and got a Toyo Field 45a ii at the very beginning of January this year. It is a very solid camera with tons of movements for a field camera. I need a field camera with all the backpacking trips I take it on. I use it with 4 lenses: a 75mm ultra wide, 90mm, 127mm (came with the crown graphic) and a 210mm. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have.

Wow. Thanks for the quick reply and useful information. The Toyos are very popular these days, with good reason, it would seem. I’ve been watching a few Linhofs on eBay recently, but have really splurged on MF equipment the last twelve months – so the budget says I may have to wait awhile before getting one! Love the LF transparencies you’ve been adding recently, there are only a handful of members on RB using LF for colour trans work, more’s the pity I think. Just today I found a few Peter Dombrovskis prints on display at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (Dombrovskis used a Linhof Master Technika 4×5) and, even at five foot plus, the detail was simply superb. No doubt about it, LF rules. Still.
    Cheers,
    Brett

  • Yes LF is still the king of landscapes. If you wander into almost any truly amazing landscape gallery you’ll find most of them use 4×5 or 8×10. I had the chance to venture into Michael Fatali’s gallery while I was in Utah a few weeks ago. He does all of his work on 8×10 and still prints them in a darkroom on cibachrome paper. The effect is like nothing I’ve ever seen and the 30×40″ prints have astounding clarity.

  • Thank you Vicki. This is not a common site for most people and I’m glad I could bring it home for others to see.
