100yds away? What lens were you using?
Actually, there’s something else that strikes me here. One of the recurrent issues I have with photographing surfing (and related sports) is that a dynamic shot often includes a wonderful “tail” of water. But including this in the frame reduces the impact of the surfer and generally tends to make it look as though he is surfing out of the picture. Your image solves this brilliantly – the kicked-up water is behind the surfer, and the surfer has cut back in towards the centre of the picture.
Thanks so much for your compliments, John. I used a Canon 100-400mm Lens with a canon 7D Body. Talking about the POV of the surfer & spray in the same shot. In my case so much has to do where the waves are forming (how far from the shore) and where I was on the beach. During the surfing competition I move from place to place because the waves and light change a lot.
