“I’ve seen supernatural beings before but never so clearly. The feathers, the eyes ….. I know you don’t believe me, Lucy, but there was another presence with that kid, looking back at me.”

“What kind of presence?” I ask. It’s obvious that whatever it is she thinks she saw has had a profound effect on her because it’s now the next morning and she’s still talking about it.

Annie frowns, shakes her head. “I’m not sure. It happened so fast. I couldn’t tell if it was an angel or a devil.”

“So you’ve seen angels and devils? You know what they look like?”

Annie gives me a narrowed look, checking if I’m laughing at her. My angels and devils disappeared a long time ago but they’re still very much there with Annie. My expression must be serious enough for her to continue. “Of course,” she says, “but I was startled and didn’t have time to register if it was benign or malevolent. It was quite a shock, Lucy, to come face to face with a being like that.”

“So do you think Cam is possessed?”

“No, this is a guardian spirit. He’s protecting her.”

“He?”

“Most definitely,” she nods.

“Why does she need him to protect her?” I’ve told her nothing about Cam or Thelma so I’m curious if she’ll come up with anything anywhere near the mark.

Wonderful verse and photo Alenka. Sometimes angels appear in the guise of devils and vice versa.

  • Thank you, Jack. I like what you say about angels and devils. I’m enjoying writing that character, watching how he appears :)
