The corner was not a corner of anything. A corner of darkness hanging in a darker abyss, it had no substance but it was all there was in which to hide. Sometimes it shrank and she had to huddle deeper. Outside the corner was more darkness, a darkness of a different kind. Sinister, it had the texture, the smell, the taste of blood. Not her own blood – she knew the taste of that – but the screaming, tepid blood of an abbatoir.
