“Wrong time of year,” murmured the preacher.

“Yes,” smiled Sam.

The preacher held the tiny tomato to his nose, sniffed. “Yet it smells fresh from the vine.”

Sam nodded. “It’s from Rosie.” Added, as the preacher looked blankly at him. “The abomination.”

The preacher winced. “I’m sorry I called the child that,” he whispered. “It is I who am the abomination.”

“No,” Sam said, and gently placed a hand on the preacher’s shoulder. “You didn’t know then what you know now.” He gazed at the old man’s downturned face. “You are not wearing your bio-suit,” he observed.

The preacher sighed, nodded. “If GOD wants me, he can take me,” he said. “I want to feel the air on my face again.”

Oh my gosh, this is so perfect. thank you for giving them images.

  • I kept looking at it, this photo in Ron’s collection, and seeing Sam and the preacher in that scene …… I think the photo catches something special between those two men that some sons have with their father, some young men have with their mentor or teacher. In this case, Sam is becoming the father, mentor, protector ……

Photos like this really help me to get the words out, just like with my young pupils where a picture always got the discussion and their writings going better than just setting the topic or posing a question could. I think I’m still a child myself :)

Wow…love the details and slight cyanish / green tone too
    !

  • Thank you, Theodore ….. the green tone is how the photo scanned. When I changed it to b&w in photoshop, it didn’t look as good I thought for the feeling I was trying to convey in the story. Some of Ron’s prints scan in interesting tones, depending I guess on what he did in the darkroom with papers and developers and how time has reacted with those chemicals on paper.
