Taken July 12/09 at the Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Pull, heavyweight division. This was the smallest but most coordinated of all the teams at 4600 pounds, but they managed to come in fourth out of the final eight. I believe they pulled about 12,600 pounds of dead weight on that sled at the end. They were such a pleasure to watch, continuously in unison. They were the only Percherons in the competition against all the large Belgians so they quickly developed a cheering section, including our group!
These horses are bred for this work with strong necks, heavy haunches and huge hooves. They wear specially cleated horseshoes and can throw up a lot of dirt when they dig in.

    Looks heavy. Great shot!

  • It is one thing to pull dead weight on its own, but compound that with the vertical sinking of the sled into the dirt and the weight multiplies drastically. The largest team of Belgians pulled a record 13,100 pounds on this day. You and I would probably struggle to pull just one of these 150 pound blocks of cement!

You really captured the raw power of these beauties, Al. Wonderful work!

  • Thanks Mike. I wasn’t in the seats I wanted, got there a tad too late, but still managed to get some good angles.

great catch,,,,,,,,,,i think they do this here but they use tractors,,,,,,,,,,,

  • This made me smile Sean, trying to imagine two tractors to work in unison, lol. I know what you mean though, we have tractor pulls here too.
