Taken July 12/09 at the Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Pull, heavyweight division.
One man drives the horses while a second man, the hooker, carries the rear hitching apparatus of the harness. The driver maneuvers the horses in an arc to the front of the sled, stops them, then backs them up just enough so the hooker can drop the hook into the hole at the end of the sled. This is a very precise maneuver, much like trying to line up a trailer hitch to a vehicle, except you are dealing with live animals anxious to get to the job of pulling. The hooker’s timing must be impeccable and the driver must exercise great control or they must repeat the process. I imagine the weight of the apparatus doesn’t make hooking a fun job. Each team will do this approximately 10-12 times during the competition.

Another beauty Al, your desctipion says it all……..awesome !! Very powerful immages !!

  • Thanks Sean. This is always my favorite part of the Calgary Stampede. The driver of this team actually was the hooker for another team that was the eventual winner, a rookie.

wow that is definantly a strong horse, amazing,my grand pop and i used to got to these big horse auctions, i was there so often some of the owners would have me ride these big boys through the ring, they are really giants while your riding on!

  • There are actually two horses there but they are so perfectly lined up it is hard to tell. I believe this was the second biggest pair in the competition.
