Taken July 12/09 at the Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Pull, heavyweight division. This was the smallest but most coordinated of all the teams at 4600 pounds, but they managed to come in fourth out of the final eight. I believe they pulled about 12,600 pounds of dead weight on that sled at the end. They were such a pleasure to watch, continuously in unison. They were the only Percherons in the competition against all the large Belgians so they quickly developed a cheering section, including our group!
These horses are bred for this work with strong necks, heavy haunches and huge hooves. They wear specially cleated horseshoes and can throw up a lot of dirt when they dig in.

Awesome capture Al….you caught this one at just the right time. Gorgeous detail as well !

  • Thanks Sean. Of course I took several shots but this team was much easier to predict because they were so coordinated.

  • They were such a pleasure to watch. Too bad they didn’t win, but the Belgian teams were all HUGE!
