Young men set off to war from here by

Swan Barracks – Francis St, Perth is Heritage listed and now serves as a backpackers lodge.

Swan Barracks was built in 1896 as an Australian Army Barracks and was used up until 1993 when it was sold.

Young men were recruited and sworn in here at the outbreak of World War II then moved to the Northam Army camp for training as the 2/16th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF). They were deployed to Egypt, Palestine and Syria.

I live in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is rugged, remote and ancient. I love to capture moments that we may easily miss or pass by. I need to slow down, live life, notice the little things and breathe….. rather than rush to my next meeting through the artificial world. Beauty is all around us, the more you look, the more you see…
Unless stated, my images are straight from the camera with minimal processing.

I should say was his , so strange as I was photographing his War medals this afternoon and looking through his old book called “A thousand men at War” its all about the 2/16th history

  • and it is a fascinating history. Too quickly society forgets the sacrifice and hardship of war and the men and women (and families) who endure service. I think that’s why I wanted to display this shot – it is not my best but it felt really important. I was jarred and annoyed that the door had been tagged probably by young men who are a similar age to those who were once sent off to war from this very door. Lest we forget.
