Light in the darkness - Coogee Power Station by

The abandoned Coogee (South Fremantle) Power Station, Western Australia

Commissioned in 1951, the power station ceased operation in 1985 as operations moved elsewhere. The structure has been stripped of all plant and machinery and it has been replaced by urban art. Tunnels, hallways, girders and staircases make up the web of trails throughout the building which is now heritage listed but in disrepair despite its vast ocean front viewing.

About Akrotiri

I live in Western Australia and love to capture moments that we may easily miss or pass by. I need to slow down, live life, notice the little things and breathe….. rather than rush to my next meeting through the artificial world. Beauty is all around us, we’re usually so busy we forget to look… But the more you look, the more you see…
Unless stated, my images are straight from the camera with minimal processing.

Beautiful light in here on some days , wonderful capture Louise

  • Yes the light was tricky yesterday, very bright or very dark. I love how it formed spotlights though. Thanks Helen

Hope you didn’t wander through there by yourself ! Great capture

  • No, we had a small group of us that wandered through. The light was fantastic = quite a challenge at some places but always interesting.

Great capture of the light here to pick out those colours!

  • Thanks Jo, some internal rooms and corridors were pitch black, others were light and open to the sky. An amazing place.

Amazing capture and statement about modern life!

  • Thanks Lynda. The visit had a lasting impact and this was my farewell as I left the building.
