The Castle of Chambord was already a separate World Heritage Site since 1981. In 2000, this site was extended with the culture landscape of the Loire Valley

It was constructed by King François I in part to be near to his mistress the Comtesse de Thoury, Claude Rohan

Chambord is the largest castle in the Loire Valley, but was built to serve only as a hunting lodge for François I
